CREAK

Creak Interface Plan

Creak is an interactive sound art project installed on the steps of the Mills Gallery in Boston. When visitors step on the stairs to enter or leave the gallery they are serenaded by shouts of pain, poetry, and audio clips from contributing artists of the BoomBox show.

This piece was inspired by my fear that my living spaces are not entirely sympathetic to my presence. I suspect my chairs think that I am heavy, that tables groan about their slovenly appearance, and would, if properly inspired, get up and walk off. When it comes to carpets and stairs, they share the experience of my passing. They don’t comment on it, but if they could, what would they say? This project explores possible audio scenarios.

This piece was installed from January 17-March 9, 2003. The curator, Roland Smart, requested a "collaborative piece" and my response was to work with selected audio from other members of the show. Some of the programs in Creak feature these contributions, including John Mallia, Jessica Rylan, Tracey Cockerell, Jessica Lindley, David Webber, Jeff Warmouth, and Christy Georg.
